“Humphreys Peak is the king of the hills in Arizona. It’s the pinnacle. The highest point in the state. If you can make it to the summit, which tops out at 12,633 feet, you’ve conquered all there is to conquer — from a hiking perspective, anyway.”

Humphreys Summit Attempt (photo by the author)

Cold summit wind
blows me back,
encircling ice encrusted trees,
impossible color of steel.
I retreat stumbling
down a rooty trail.

Next time we reach the top.
Next time we ignore
every warning sign.
We’ll reach the top!

It’s a perilous place
It’s a reachable peak
It’s unreachable.

If I get there
will I fly away
toward the canyon?
Gold and lavender cliffs
always calling.
So old, so
very, very old.

My legs are tired,
the damaged parts
hold me back.

I will summit.
With only sky beyond me,
and next the starry elements
unknown and unbound!
I will see you there.

I love both reading and writing poems, as they are capable of transporting us with just a few words. I also tell my stories with paint on canvas.
